We know, however, that our bottom line performance is enhanced by excellence in health, safety and environmental performance and by addressing community, employee and stakeholder expectations. Each of these non-financial aspects is clearly capable of having a financial impact, either directly, through operating costs or litigation, or indirectly, by affecting our access to capital, ‘licence to operate’ and retention of quality people. Maximising the bottom line is therefore also about recognising the value protection and value add that can be achieved through enhanced performance in the non-financial dimensions of our business.
