WMC has dedicated significant time and resources dealing with what sustainability means to a diversified resources company.

Contributing to an enhanced quality of life for our employees, communities and society, and doing so equitably is a beginning. Conducting our operations in a way that respects respects local ecosystems, and protects and preserves shared natural resources for future generations is another.

The sustainability challenge is about incorporating social, economic and environmental risks and benefits into our business decision-making. Whether we are exploring for new resources, operating our sites, interacting with our communities or closing and rehabilitating depleted reserves, we face these difficult decisions daily.

We approach these challenges with a strong ethical foundation based on our code of conduct. We have an integrated approach, which includes a comprehensive risk-assessment process that balances the potential social, community, environmental and financial consequences of projects. We set high standards of environmental and safety performance and are accountable for our achievements against these standards.

We cannot achieve our sustainability objectives alone. Our partnerships with local communities, engaging with government and non-government organisations and our participation on taskforces and associations influence these processes. Our communications and reporting processes help us to review how effective we are at making on-going improvements to our approach.

Our commitment to sustainability is now a feature of every aspect of our management approach.
