International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM)

WMC is a founding member of the International Council on Mining and Metals. Formed in October 2001 as part of the Global Mining Initiative, the Council represents an authoritative international voice for the industry with a specific focus on sustainable development.

As a member, we are committed to the Council's principles, which form the core of its sustainable development framework. The Minerals Council of Australia has incorporated and expanded on the international council's principles in its Enduring Value - The Australian Minerals Industry Framework for Sustainable Development that was launched in October 2004.

We have reviewed our company policies, procedures and practices against the requirements of the International Council on Mining and Metals principles and the Australian Council's 'enduring value' framework, and we are planning to progressively align our systems and activities with those requirements.

Minerals Council of Australia (MCA)

The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) is the peak industry organisation representing Australia's exploration, mining and minerals processing industry, nationally and internationally, in its contribution to sustainable development.

WMC Resources plays an active role in the Minerals Council of Australia. Our CEO, Andrew Michelmore, sits on the MCA Board, and we are represented on various MCA committees and working groups, including the Sustainable Development Committee and the Occupational Safety and Health Committee.

During 2004, we had an active role in two OHS sub-committees, one dealing with research into fatigue and sleep in Fly-in-Fly-out operations, and the other dealing with the root causes of mobile equipment incidents. We also contributed to the development of the Enduring Value - the Australian Minerals Industry Framework for Sustainable Development, and will become a signatory in 2005.
