WMC Stakeholder Perception Index

In 2004, WMC began the development of an annual stakeholder index - built on regular community, investor, employee and public surveys around core organisational capacity measures. Without an existing model to adapt, WMC created the index from the ground up - aligning the four organisational capacity measures - management, operational, communication and compliance & ethics- with WMC's code of conduct and overall business plan (see table below).

The first annual index is targeted to be produced in July 2005, drawing together results across stakeholder groups under these four capacity areas. The results of the index will be reported annually through WMC's sustainability noticeboard and will provide a organisational driver to better target stakeholder programs. The community surveys, reported in our 2004 community performance section, contain the results, compiled under this index approach from community surveys in Kalgoorlie and Mt Isa.

Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI)

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index provides an objective benchmark of corporate sustainability that is used by a variety of international fund managers and investors. The DJSI follows a ‘best-in-class’ approach comprising the sustainability leaders from each industry. The 2,500 largest capitalized companies in the Dow Jones Global Index are eligible for consideration. Categorized into 60 DJSI industry groups, companies are assessed in line with general and industry-specific criteria. On an annual basis, they are compared against their peers and ranked accordingly. Only the leading companies are included in the DJSI.

In September 2004, WMC was included as a sustainability leader in the DJSI industry group on Mining for the fifth consecutive year. With a maximum of four companies being assessed and selected in the DJSI industry group on mining, this recognises WMC's sustainability performance alongside other sector leaders:- Rio Tinto plc, Anglo American plc and BHP Billiton Group.
