Air Quality

Our View

The quality of air is critically important. Many countries have legislation that requires industrial and mining companies to comply with stringent air quality standards. Also, people consider the mining industry as one of the major contributors to air pollution, particularly in the processing and refining stages of metal production. So, it is important that we behave responsibly towards reduction of air pollution.

We can significantly reduce air pollution by:

  • understanding the meteorological conditions under which we operate; and
  • putting to work proper engineering and operating practices.

Our Environmental Commitment

In WMC, we will:

  • determine the baseline meteorological and air quality characteristics for all new projects.
  • identify all potential sources of contaminants such as dust, greenhouse gases, volatile organic compounds, ozone depleting substances, sulphur dioxide, and other gases and odours.
  • consult with interested parties on air management strategies.
  • have an air emissions management plan, including a monitoring strategy, to prevent or minimise environmental impact.
  • give consideration to potential future reductions in emission or ambient air quality standards when designing and constructing our facilities.
  • phase out the use of ozone-depleting substances.
