Energy Use

Our View

Energy use is a major cost at all WMC operations. It not only reduces the energy producing resources that are finite, but also adds greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. There are a number of programs that encourage energy users to manage their energy consumption efficiently. Such programs also encourage energy users to consider more greenhouse-friendly energy supply options such as co-generation and renewable energy.

The community has a strong interest in the greenhouse-effect and closely watches our efforts to reduce emissions. In Australia, WMC is part of the Greenhouse Challenge Program and has committed to reducing its emissions on a per-unit-of-production basis.

In response to international climate change undertakings, many jurisdictions are encouraging the introduction of:

  • alternative energy;
  • less emission-intensive energy; and
  • renewable energy.

In WMC, we will need to build our capacities in the use of alternative and renewable energy sources to reduce our energy costs and meet future government requirements.

Our Environmental Commitment

In WMC, we will:

  • establish an inventory of all significant potential energy uses.
  • establish an energy management plan.
  • use energy-efficient designs for all plant and items of equipment.
  • actively promote efficient use of energy.
  • monitor our energy consumption and perform regular energy audits.
  • consider the use of alternative and renewable energy sources.
