Biodiversity and Land Use

Our View

Conservation of biodiversity is a global concern and communities, local and world wide, take a strong interest in the conservation of plants and animals. Companies also have legal obligations to minimise impacts to flora and fauna. Therefore, our performance on conserving biodiversity has a strong influence on us retaining our "licence to operate".

The WMC Environment Policy specifically refers to the conservation of important populations of flora and fauna.

Our Environmental Commitment

In WMC, we will:

  • determine landscape and visual characteristics for all new projects.
  • collect baseline data on flora, fauna and ecosystems in all new project developments.
  • minimise disturbances by effective environmental impact assessment, planning and design of new projects.
  • establish monitoring programs to determine the impact of our operations on biodiversity.
  • establish specific management plans for endangered or significant flora, fauna and habitats. This may be in the form of in-situ or ex-situ conservation areas where special measures will be taken to conserve threatened habitats and/or populations of threatened or endangered species
  • facilitate measures for the recovery and rehabilitation of threatened species and their reintroduction into their natural habitats under appropriate conditions
  • as far as practical, prevent the introduction of, control or eradicate introduced species which threaten ecosystems, habitats or species.
  • promote and encourage, as appropriate, understanding of the importance of, and the measures required for the conservation of biological diversity amongst the workforce and community.
  • consider aspects of biodiversity conservation in our rehabilitation and closure plans.
