We provide direct sponsorships and grants to the community.
During 2004, we provided direct sponsorship worth more than $2.7 million plus significant ‘in kind’ donations and support.
WMC donated $100,000 through the Red Cross in recognition of the devastation caused by the south-east Asian tsunami. In early 2005, we also implemented a program to match employee contributions for tsunami relief.

Australia
Royal Flying Doctor Service
We continued to support the Royal Flying Doctor Service, donating $80,000 towards services in the areas we operate in. As in 2003, we also donated $30,000 to employ two Aboriginal liaison officers for visits to indigenous communities in South Australia. We also raised over $24,000 for the service on behalf of shareholders who elected to receive communications electronically.
Western Australia
Kambalda community
In recognition of over 40 years in partnership with the Kambalda community, WMC made community grants of $1.5 million to build a recreation centre and $250,000 to construct a seniors' facility.
Health services
WMC donated $50,000 to the Wiluna-based Ngangganawili Parenting and Early Childhood Development Program.
Mining Hall of Fame
As part of a five-year, $450,000 sponsorship, WMC provided over $100,000 in cash and resources to develop the Mining Hall of Fame website.
Malleefowl Preservation Group
We continued our five-year association with the Malleefowl Preservation Group, donating $5,400 to study the population and habitat of these endangered birds.
South Australia
Strengthening Families
In Roxby Downs, we continued to support the Strengthening Families initiative, donating $4,500 to provide services for local parents and families in need.
Arid Recovery
WMC continued to support Arid Recovery, an organisation that restores and protects outback ecosystems (www.aridrecovery.org.au). Our donation of over $274,000 helped reintroduce plants and animals to a reserve located partly on our Olympic Dam mine lease.
Queensland
Tools For Change
WMC provided $28,600 for Tools For Change in Queensland, helping students to make a smooth transition to high school.
School of Excellence
WMC supported Sunset State School's Centre of Excellence, Mount Isa, for the third consecutive year. Our $5,500 donation helped improve the resource centre for local primary school children studying mathematics, science and technology.
Make-A-Wish Foundation
Our Phosphate Hill employees walk almost 1,000 kilometers to Townsville every two years to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The 2004 team broke previous records, raising $51,500 (including $10,000 from WMC).
Political donations
WMC Resources does not make donations to political parties and does not envisage altering this position. Beyond the modest and declared payment of registration fees for attending various party conventions, WMC did not make any donations to political parties during 2004.
The WMC - Lindesay Clark Trust Fund provided $137,500 in grants in 2004 including:
- $60,000 to the Goldfields Football Academy in Kalgoorlie-Boulder as part of the Trust's $180,000 three-year commitment to the Academy which aims to increase retention of Indigenous students in high school.
- $15,000 to the Institute for Child Health Research in Perth as part of the Trust's $72,000 five-year commitment to the Institute for research into childhood asthma.
- $50,000 to the Nganggamawilli Parenting & Early Childhood Development Program in Wiluna, Western Australia to support the provision of services and support to mothers and infants.
