Performance Overview
A summary of our performance
During 2004 we:

- operated without a fatality and had no injuries that caused permanent disabilities
- significantly reduced the severity of lost-time injuries suffered by our people, but recorded an increase in the our medical plus lost-time injury frequency rate
- suffered six cases of workplace illness, down from 12 during 2003
- environmental non-compliance incidents, reduced from 29 during 2003 to 21 during 2004
- continued to be recognised in the independent Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes
- provided 20 indigenous and local people with job-readiness training, and provided a further 12 traineeships
- increased indigenous employment at our sites by 23 percent
- undertook comprehensive stakeholder perception surveys in Western Australian Queensland communities
- provided direct sponsorships worth $2.7 million including a one-off community grant of 1.75 million for the Kambalda community, we also contributed significant ‘in-kind’ and community support in areas in which we operate
- continued to address the significant challenges of retaining and attracting highly-capable employees worldwide
- continued with or implemented programs to help our people improve their skills base, performance management and career development
- completed the review of our approach to fly-in, fly-out rosters, resulting in a new roster system.
As outlined under the ‘our performance’ sections of this site, we believe that we have made substantial progress toward, or met, our sustainability objectives for 2004, and we are well placed to achieve shareholder and stakeholder expectations during 2005 and beyond.
