Risk ManagementKalgoorlie Nickel Smelter and Kambalda Concentrator continue to operate an independent risk management system and supporting processes. This includes risk identification, documentation of risks, identification and implementation of actions to minimise risks and maintenance of a risk register. The risk register is used in the development of the site's Business Plan, and supporting capital plans and department business plans. The site will continue the full implementation of the WMC Integrated Operational Risk Management Process (IORM) during 2005. The objective of the IORM process is to ensure a consistent management of risk across all WMC operations and facilitate improved reporting of risks at a corporate level. In preparation for the implementation of the IORM process, initial IORM workshops were completed during 2004 and all risks have been identified and ranked. Audits and Assurance ReportingEnvironment, Health and Safety (EHS) Management System Standards and Major Hazard Standards are audited every two years to assess the site's performance against corporate and statutory requirements. In 2003, the site conducted self-assessments against all the EHS Management System Standards and five Major Hazard Standards. During 2004, the five remaining Major Hazards Standards were audited in accordance with WMC's internal assurance requirement. Deficiencies are discussed and actions to improve agreed. The Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter is ISO 9001 Certified. ISO 9001 is the International Standard that defines the minimum requirements for managing the quality of a process or service. The smelter has achieved Certification to this standard for the smelting of nickel concentrates to produce and supply nickel matte and sulphuric acid. Independent external audits (third party) and regular internal audits are conducted as part of the certification process. |
