Fitness for Work

Our Approach

Our ‘fitness for work’ program is part of our wider focus on providing a safe work environment for all employees and contractors.

Fitness for work encompasses managing elements of personal well-being that can affect work performance and safety. This includes fatigue, stress, impairment due to prescription or non-prescription drugs, alcohol and the person's emotional state.

Our program provides front-end training to employees on the company's policies and procedures, their personal responsibilities and methods for them to manage their fitness for work. Supervisors, supported by site Human Resources professionals, are provided with training on how to manage employees who they believe are not fit for work. An individual found not to be fit-for-work receives assistance and support from on-site personnel or external professionals from the company's Employee Assistance Program. Plans to address a fitness for work issue are formulated between the employee, their supervisor and site Human Resource representatives. Where this is a serious or repeated breach of WMC's fitness for work policy, the company retains the right to take further disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.

Random drug and alcohol tests at all sites and offices are used to test for the presence of alcohol or illegal drugs. ‘For-cause’ testing is undertaken at the company's discretion following an incident or where there is a reasonable belief that an individual may not be fit for work.
